Anxiety and depression are the number one emotional health disorders in the world, affecting millions of people worldwide. The good news is that these conditions are different than mental illness, and a variety of help is available for relief and recovery.

If the mind can create fear, panic, and depression, then the opposite is true. A healthy mind can calm, rationalize, and facilitate happiness by powerful, positive thinking and responses. Consider this, if you will, as being an alternate power source that you can decisively plug into.

Mind/Body Connection

Although used interchangeability, there is a distinction between the brain and the mind. The brain is a physical mass of nerve tissue, and the mind is a vast consciousness within the brain that directs mental and physical behaviors. The connection between the mind and the body is constant. The human body is very holistic; that is to say that each part affects the whole. For example, a person who had asthma attacks from flowers suffered an attack from silk flowers when this person's mind believed that the flowers were real. This is certainly evidence of the power of the mind, and its influence on the body.

Conversely, how we feel physically affects the way we feel emotionally and mentally. Diet, exercise and sleep all have profound affects on us physically, emotionally, and mentally.

Diet

Sugar and caffeine products, such as chocolate, coffee, teas and caffeinated sodas, are stimulants. Sugar, especially refined sugar, and caffeine should be used in moderation or eliminated from the diets of people suffering with anxiety.

Exercise

Walking is a low impact conditioning that increases the efficiency of the body's intake of oxygen. Other aerobic exercises include running, swimming, dancing, and cycling and stimulate heart and lung activity long enough to produce beneficial changes in the body. Exercising at least 1/2 hour per day is good for physical as well as mental health. People suffering with anxiety have a lot of energy, and exercise is a very beneficial way to burn energy. Exercise also releases endorphins, a brain chemical that leads to feelings of euphoria.
